Why Most Tubes Fail
Here is the thing about standard quartz: it hates “thermal shock.” In a PET blowing machine, things heat up and cool down fast. That constant swinging creates tiny, invisible cracks in the glass. Eventually, one of those cracks gives way, and pop—there goes your afternoon. We did things differently with our reinforced quartz. We tweaked the composition so the glass can actually take that heat stress without cracking. We also obsessed over the tungsten filament. If that filament sags or shifts even a tiny bit, it creates a “hot spot” on the tube wall. It’s like putting a blowtorch to one spot on a glass jar; it’s going to break. By keeping the filament perfectly centered, the heat spreads evenly. No hot spots, no premature burn-outs.
The Heat Balance
To get PET preforms soft enough to blow without melting the neck, you need a lot of power, fast. High-wattage shortwave lamps do the trick, but they put a massive load on your power supplies. But here is a pro tip:Check your reflectors. If they’re dirty or knocked out of alignment, the heat doesn’t go into the plastic—it bounces right back into the lamp tube. You’re basically cooking the lamp from the outside in. Even the toughest reinforced tube will give up if it’s fighting a dirty reflector.
