
Keeping Your Bathroom Heaters from Becoming a Hazard
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is a completely different beast than tossing one onto a dry factory floor. In a bathroom, you’ve got steam, splashes, and constant humidity. If you aren’t careful, that cozy heater turns into a serious liability pretty quickly. To get the insulation right, we have to obsess over two things: the dielectric barrier and how we seal those terminal connections.
Dealing with Leakage
Here’s the thing about damp air: moisture loves to create little “bridges” on the surface of the lamp housing. Once that happens, electricity starts wandering where it shouldn’t. To stop that, we use high-grade quartz glass with specific coatings that keep the current exactly where it belongs. You can actually test this yourself. Grab a megohmmeter, set it to 500V DC, and check the insulation resistance. If you see that number dip below 100MΩ, stop right there. Your seal is leaked.
The Danger Zone: Terminals
Most of these units fail at the connection point between the lamp and the power lead. It’s the weakest link. We fix this by using hermetically sealed ceramic insulators and silicone potting compounds. Basically, we’re cocooning the live contacts so moisture can’t touch them. If you try to use a standard R7s or SK15 socket without a moisture-proof shroud, you’re asking for arcing. It’s just a matter of time. That’s why we stick to IP65-rated enclosures—they keep the wiring bone-dry.
The Heat Trap
But wait, there’s a catch. Tight seals are great for safety, but they trap heat. When you wrap a lamp in a heavy-duty insulation housing, the air around the sockets gets scorching. If you use standard PVC wiring, it’ll melt. Period. You need to use high-temperature silicone or PTFE insulation. It’s the only way to make sure the wires don’t burn out when the airflow is restricted. And for heaven’s sake, don’t skip the grounding. Every single chassis needs to be bonded to a dedicated earth ground. If something does go wrong and the insulation fails, you want the breaker to trip instantly. You definitely don’t want the ceiling frame becoming live.
